An aggregate similar to limestone, Bearlite (Calcium Sulfate) is primarily used for pre-paving. Bear Industries, Inc. now owns the mining rights to produce Bearlite, which has recently been used and accepted by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) as an alternative to soil cement base course, cement treated sand clay gravel, cement treated sand-shell, and recycled portland cement concrete (crushed concrete) and limestone. Generally used as a base course prior to the placement of asphalitic concrete (hotmix) surface and/or concrete pavement, Bearlite is a cost effective alternative to other aggregates like limestone.
